Gottfried Bernhard Loos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried Bernhard Loos (born August 6, 1773 in Berlin ; † July 29, 1843 there ) was a German mint master and entrepreneur.

Life

Gottfried Bernhard Loos was the son of the royal Prussian court medalist Daniel Friedrich Loos from Altenburg , who came from a family of die cutters. However, he did not follow the artistically practical career of his father as a medalist , but approached the coin subject from the scientific and economic side. After completing his studies, he became an employee of the Berlin Mint as an apprentice in 1795 . In 1797 Gottfried Bernhard Loos became Wardein there , mint master in 1806 and General Wardein in 1812 and in 1823 he was appointed mint councilor. After the death of his father, he profiled and positioned his father's company on the market as a Berlin medal mint . The company produced a large number of commemorative coins and medals, which it documented and offered in several sales catalogs published by Loos. Loos drew on the designs of various artists and worked with various medalists to implement them. Against this background, his personal signature practice has been controversial and misleading since the mid-19th century. After his death, the Berlin medal mint was continued by Ludwig Ostermann (1819–1900) until 1879 .

Awards

Loos was an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts from 1828 until his death and belonged to the section for the fine arts. He was a knight of the Vasa Order . Loos was a member of the Berlin Freemasons' lodge at the golden plow .

In 1837 he was awarded the 4th Class Red Eagle Order .
