As a result, he spent about 1879 several times to conduct research in the Zoological Station in Naples on to studies of algae perform before settling in Göttingen as a student from 1881 Johannes Reinke , the former professor of botany and first director of the Plant Physiology Institute, habilitated . These stays were supported by Gustav von Goßler , who later supported him in his appointment as professor. In 1887 Gottfried Berthold succeeded Johannes Reinke in both positions until he retired in 1923 . In 1887 he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and in 1888 a member of the Leopoldina Academic Academy .

Act

After Gottfried Berthold had dealt with sea algae particularly successfully in Naples in his first shorter but very fruitful creative period , he turned to physical aspects in his second period to understand the function of the cell based on the protoplasmic mechanics and looked for the plant organization through causal, explain developmental anatomy while avoiding teleological trains of thought.
