Schmidt was initially "in the service" of a minister in Berlin, but later turned to acting and made his stage debut in 1771. From 1772 he went to the Schuch'schen Gesellschaft under the principal rule of the widowed Johanna Caroline Schuch , whose troupe consisted of more than 30 people and performed mainly in Königsberg (Prussia) and Danzig with a recognized high-quality repertoire . This was followed by engagements with Johann Heinrich Jacob Amberg in Stralsund (1775–1776), with Peter Christian Reymann in Greifswald and Rostock and, after his failure, briefly with Peter Florenz Ilgener in Rostock.

In 1776 Schmidt came to Lüneburg as co-director of Johann Friedrich Stöffler's company, and in the spring of 1779 he founded the “Lübsche Gesellschaft deutscher Unternehmer” (Lübsche Society of German Actors) with which he worked in Rostock (April to June 1780), Wismar (summer 1780, September 1781) ), Lübeck (main town of the troops), Eutin (winter 1780/81, October 1781 to March 1782, there presumably cooperation with Franz Anton von Weber ), and Lüneburg (spring 1781), dismissal of this troop on March 1, 1782 in Eutin .

1782–1784 director of a new company under L. Nuth, which played in Altona (1782, August 1783 to January 1784), Eutin (October 1782 to January 1783) and Kiel (early 1784, where it again failed and became part of the Wäsersche Gesellschaft ) . In 1787 Schmidt played with Jean Tilly in Lübeck, in 1794 with Johann Ferdinand Kübler in Bützow , Wismar, Rostock, Doberan and Schwerin .

The last time Gottfried Heinrich Schmidt was found in 1796 as sub-director of the second society of Maria Barbara Wäser in Lower Silesia .

Schmidt's stage roles were initially comical servants, lovers, farmers, first military roles (spoken theater, singing and also dance). Later he appeared with Tilly both in speaking roles and with singing as a German-French, old man and servant, with Kübler he was also successful in comic roles.

Since 1775 at the latest, Schmidt was married to the actress Anna Maria Kunigunde Meyer (born 1752 or 1732), who appeared next to her husband in spoken theater and singing as the first tender lovers, queens, disguised roles, figurines and other supporting roles.
