Gottfried I (Habsburg-Laufenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried I (Habsburg-Laufenburg) , (* before 1239 ; † September 1271 in "Heimat"), was Count of Habsburg-Laufenburg and called himself Count in Zurichgau .

Life

Gottfried I was the second oldest of the five sons of Count Rudolf III. The silent one, in 1242 he went into a bloody feud against his cousin Rudolf IV, who later became King (I) , and destroyed his possessions in Brugg and Habsburg after Laufenburg and the surrounding area had previously been plagued by it.

After his father died in 1249, a better family relationship developed again, the five brothers came to an agreement and left the energetic Gottfried I in charge. The eldest, Werner, died early (before summer 1253), the younger Rudolf became a churchman and bishop of Constance (as II.), The next Otto was a Teutonic knight.

Gottfried I now ran the Laufenburg house alone; after a reconciliation, he became a faithful companion in arms of his cousin King Rudolf. In 1261 he moved with him in the feud against Walter von Geroldseck , Bishop of Strasbourg (1260–1262) in Alsace. In 1265 he fought with him in Freiburg im Üechtland against Count Peter II of Savoy (1263–1267) and the city of Bern to assert the Kyburg heritage for Habsburg. The youngest brother Eberhard then married in 1273 with the heir daughter Anna von Kyburg , whose guardians had been Rudolf, Gottfried and Hugo von Werdenberg , and thus founded the Neu-Kyburg line .

In 1271 he was in the army of Ottokar of Bohemia against the Hungarian king Stephan V , here he was seriously wounded and returned to his homeland, where he died in September 1271. He had won no advantages and after his death the rivalry between the two houses broke out again. This was an advantage for King Rudolf, who was able to expand the sphere of influence on both sides of the Rhine.

Marriage and offspring

Gottfried was married to Adelheid von Freiburg, sister of Konrad Graf von Urach-Freiburg, and had two underage sons:
