Gottfried IV von Eppstein (* around 1291  ; † before 1342 or between November 9, 1341 and June 3, 1342) was a nobleman of the younger line of the Eppstein family . The Eppsteiners, who succeeded in establishing one of the most important aristocratic rule in Hesse in the late Middle Ages and who were wealthy in Spessart, Taunus and Wetterau as early as 1200, were noble lords and in the 13th century had four archbishops and electors from Mainz .

Life

Gottfried IV von Eppstein was the son of Siegfried von Eppstein and his wife Isengard von Falkenstein .

He married

  • Jutte (place and date of marriage unknown) and
  • Loretta von Daun zu Oberstein (location unknown, marriage before May 20, 1317 or between 1314 and May 20, 1317)

The following children emerged from her marriage to Loretta von Daun zu Oberstein :

  • Gottfried V. von Eppstein (* around 1318; † between August 4, 1336 and October 9, 1341)
  • Loretta von Eppstein (* 1319 - † March 12, 1353 or in 1351)
  • Isengard von Eppstein (* unknown; † in 1365)

Under Gottfried IV. Eppstein was granted city rights in 1318 as the first city in what is now the Main-Taunus district. Although princes were allowed to grant market and fortification rights since 1220/1231, Gottfried IV asked the then Roman-German King and later Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Ludwig the Bavarian for city rights for Eppstein. The corresponding document was issued on November 30, 1318 in Oppenheim.
