Gottfried Less

Gottfried Less (born January 31, 1736 in Konitz in Polish Prussia , † August 28, 1797 in Hanover ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Less, son of a businessman, studied theology at the universities of Halle and Jena from 1752 . He had worked on Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten's work News of Strange Books . From 1757 he was first a candidate, from 1761 he was associate professor of theology at the Academic Gymnasium Danzig . In 1762 he went to Göttingen as an associate professor and university preacher, where he became a full professor and director of the preachers' college in 1765. In 1766 he received his doctorate in theology.

In 1784 he was appointed Primarius and Consistorial Councilor at the University of Göttingen . From 1791 he was palace preacher and general superintendent of the general diocese of Hoya-Diepholz in Hanover . In 1793 he became general superintendent of the General Diocese of Calenberg . Shortly before his death, he took over the management of the court and daughter's school in Hanover.

Less is considered a representative of Enlightenment theology.
