Gotthard von Falkenhausen

Gotthard Ludwig Hans Dietrich Freiherr von Falkenhausen (born January 20, 1899 in Steinkirchen , † November 1, 1982 in Essen ) was a German banker .

Life

Von Falkenhausen studied law at the University of Göttingen and became a member of the Corps Saxonia there . After completing his studies, he first settled as a lawyer in Königsberg (Prussia) , became legal advisor in 1929, then deputy bank director in Berlin . In 1935 he took over the branch of HSBC Trinkaus in Essen and in 1938 became a personally liable partner.

From 1939 to 1944 he worked in Paris , where, with Caesar von Hofacker , among others, he revised the Kreisau Circle's plans for a reorganization of the Reich after the planned assassination attempt on Hitler . After the attack, he was arrested, taken to Berlin and released from Gestapo custody on January 19, 1945 for lack of evidence. During his imprisonment, von Falkenhausen, who had been a member of the NSDAP since May 1, 1937, was expelled from the party on December 16, 1944.

From 1960 to 1970 von Falkenhausen was President and then Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Essen, from 1960 to 1967 President of the Board of Directors of the Association of German Banks (BdB). He was also a co-founder of the Franco-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce .

Awards

Von Falkenhausen was a bearer of the Great Federal Cross of Merit with a star and an honorary member of the Federal Association of German Banks.
