Gottlieb Friedrich Machtholf
Gottlieb Friedrich Machtholf (born June 10, 1735 in Sulzfeld near Bretten , † January 2, 1800 in Möttlingen near Calw in the northern Black Forest ) was a Lutheran pastor and a representative of late pietism in Württemberg.
Machtholf, the son of pastor Erhard Friedrich Machtholf, who died in 1737, studied Protestant theology in Tübingen from 1752 to 1757 , where he was mainly influenced by Karl Heinrich Rieger . Then he was vicar in Bernloch on the Swabian Alb and from 1760 in Hirsau . In 1763 he became pastor in nearby Möttlingen, where Christian Gottlob Barth and Johann Christoph Blumhardt worked in the 19th century . He held office there restlessly until his death. Among other things, he was responsible for building new schools in Möttlingen and in the Unterhaugstett branch community . Anecdotes testify to his willingness to help. His revival sermon found audiences beyond the parish .
Machtholf was married to Johanna Christiana Braun from 1763 until her death in 1769. Three children survived childhood; Johann Gottlieb Eberhard (1765–1840) became a pastor, Christian Johannes Friedrich (* 1766) became a doctor.
Contemporaries describe Machtholf as a Swabian original. Gottlieb Wilhelm Hoffmann attributed his conversion to him. He was one of the leading clergymen of late pietism in Württemberg in the 18th century and oriented himself towards the Bengel School ( Johann Albrecht Bengel ).
