Gottlieb Jakob Kuhn

Gottlieb Jakob Kuhn (born October 16, 1775 in Bern , † July 23, 1849 in Burgdorf ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor and folk songwriter.

Life

From 1799 to 1806 he was vicar in Sigriswil . From 1804 to 1810 he published the Berner Hinkenden Boten , and in 1806 he became a teacher in Bern. Together with Johann Rudolf Wyss and Ludwig Meisner , he founded the folkloric almanac Alpenrosen in 1811 . In 1812 Kuhn became pastor in Rüderswil , and in 1824 he moved to the town church in Burgdorf .

Kuhn wrote numerous folk songs, mostly in Bern German and often to his own melodies, including Der Gemsjäger, Ha an em Ort es Blüemeli gseh, Der Ustig wott cho and Ach wie churzen üsi Tage . He also published theological works and conservative political pamphlets. Kuhn was one of the initiators of the first Unspunnen Festival in 1805.

His estate is in the Bern Burger Library .
