Gottlieb Lüscher (born May 31, 1897 in Muhen ; † July 12, 1984 in Gümligen ; resident in Muhen) was a Swiss food technologist and entrepreneur .

childhood and education

Gottlieb Lüscher was born into a poor farming family. He grew up in Muhen and attended the district school in Kölliken . Since the family had no money for a bike , he covered this distance on foot every day. Later he attended the canton school in Aarau . Lüscher studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich from 1916 to 1920 and obtained his doctorate in 1921 .

Haco

In 1922 Gottlieb Lüscher joined the newly founded Haco . In 1926 he took over both the scientific and the technical management. He was a director until 1966 and a member of the board of directors from 1967 to 1980. In 1927, Lüscher saved the company from bankruptcy when he invented a cheap process for making wort. In 1929, Lüscher met the Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler . This was the beginning of a long-term friendship as well as a business partnership between Migros and Haco that continues to this day. At that time, Haco began to copy branded items for Migros. In the beginning, the Ovaltine were Eimalzin and four different Boullion varieties. 1931 followed as a cheap counterpart to the coffee Hag , the decaffeinated Zaun coffee. In the following years, Haco also developed various products for Migros, such as the farmer cereal bar .

The greatest coup of Haco under the Lüscher era was achieved by Tadeusz Reichstein . In 1931, Gottlieb Lüscher named his college friend as head of the newly established pharmaceutical research department. This succeeded, among other things, the synthesizing of vitamin C 's and cortisone . Reichstein received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1950 .

In 1982, on the occasion of the 85th birthday and the 60th anniversary of the service, a biography that Paul Rothenhäusler and Lüscher had created himself was published.

Aftermath

In 1972 Gottlieb Lüscher donated an old people's home to his home town of Muhen. To this day, students with their hometown of Muhen benefit from a scholarship fund, which was also donated by Lüscher.
