The list of governorates of Yemen has 22 governorates ( Arabic محافظة, DMG muḥāfaẓa , pluralمحافظات / muḥāfaẓāt ) and the capital district ( Arabic محافظة أمانة العاصمة, DMG muḥāfaẓat amānat al-ʿāṣima ), into which Yemen had been divided since 2004. The 22nd governorate - Socotra - only came into being in December 2013. Before that, Socotra was part of Hadramaut.

The governorates are subdivided into 333 districts, these further into 2210 sub-districts. At the lowest administrative level there are 38,284 villages (as of 2001).

Until 1990, Yemen was divided into the Yemeni Arab Republic (North Yemen) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen).

In 2014 it became known that the government wanted to divide Yemen into six regions, although the capital district should remain as a separate, seventh regional unit.
