The Green Lake is around 5,000 m² of still water near Hundelshausen , the southernmost district of the city of Witzenhausen in the Werra-Meißner district in North Hesse . The former gypsum quarry is now used as a swimming lake .

The Green Lake is located in the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) on the northeast edge of the village of Hundelshausen. It is located at the southwest foot of the Ellerstein (approx. 350 m ). The Werra tributary Gelster flows about 200 m west of the lake in the forest .
Natural allocation
The Green Lake is located in the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) at the transition area of the main units Fulda-Werra-Bergland (357) with the sub-unit Kaufunger Wald and Söhre (357.7) belonging to the natural area Hinterer Kaufunger Wald (357.72) and Lower Werrabergland ( 358) with the Lower Gelstertal natural area (358.01), which belongs to the Unterwerrasattel sub-unit (358.0 ).
Emergence
The Green Lake, which is partially surrounded by steep slopes, was created in 1940, when groundwater, precipitation and surface water filled with groundwater, precipitation and surface water through an abandoned open- cast mine hole in a gypsum quarry. Its green color is due to its abundance of phytoplankton .
