Unterwerrasattel
The Unterwerrasattel is a landscape of the Lower Werrabergland in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis , Hessen ( Germany ).
Geographical location
The Unterwerrasattel lies between the Werra in the north and east, the Hohe Meißner in the southwest and the Kaufunger Wald in the northwest. The closest towns are Witzenhausen on the northern edge and Bad Sooden-Allendorf on the eastern edge, the district town of Eschwege is about 6 kilometers from the southeastern edge.
Natural structure
The Unterwerrasattel is structured according to sheet 112 Kassel as follows:

- 358.0 Under Werra saddle
- 358.00 Kleinalmeröder hill country
- 358.01 Lower Gelstertal
- 358.02 Soodener Bergland
- 358.03 Meissner foreland

- Entry of the Gelster near Hundelshausen from the Velmed valley of the Witzenhausen-Altmorschen valley
- Hinterer Kaufunger Wald (Kühlestuhl: 433 m) in the north-west
- Escape of the Gelster at Witzenhausen into the Werra valley
- Witzenhausen – Hedemündener Werratal in the north and east
Geology and nature
The Unterwerrasattel lies in the transition area between the foothills of the Thuringian Basin in the east, the Lower Hessian Basin in the southwest and the geological formation of the Leinegraben and the Solling vault in the north. The landscape along the Gelster is crossed by the Altmorschen-Göttingen Graben zone that stretches along the Rhine . Geologically, a complex system of tectonic rocks ( greywacke ), rocks from the Triassic and dolomite stones from the Zechstein has formed.
The different resilience of the individual rock types has resulted in a diverse and varied landscape. On the one hand there is the mainly agriculturally used Kleinalmeröder hill country and Meißner foreland and on the other hand the heavily structured and mostly forested Sooden mountainous region directly above the Werra valley .
Kleinalmeröder hill country
The Kleinalmeröder hill country is a predominantly agricultural landscape between the Kaufunger Forest and the Gelstertal. Geologically, the dolomite and limestone of the Zechstein are mainly found here. Numerous small streams from the Kaufunger Wald cross the hilly landscape towards Werra ( Wilhelmshäuser Bach , Krumbach , Hungerhäuser Bach ) or Gelster ( Dohrenbach , Fahrenbach ).
Lower Gelstertal
The Lower Gelstertal includes the course of the river, which ends shortly before it flows into the Werra, in the area of the breakthrough through the Unterwerrasattel. Here, steep, wooded slopes in the Grauwackesockel alternate with flat, agriculturally used Zechstein areas.
Soodener Bergland
The Soodener Bergland is the mountainous region immediately west of the Werra, made of the rocks of the basement and various other types of rock. It is strongly structured and mostly forested.
Meißner foreland
The Meißner foreland comprises the gently undulating hill country located directly at the eastern foot of the Hohe Meißner . Geologically characteristic is the deposit of basalt rubble on the red sandstone with small deposits of gypsum and dolomite. The hill country is criss-crossed by numerous flat valleys, small peaks and ridges loosen up the landscape. Karst water emerges in the upper Sohlental ( Kressenborn and Breitenborn ). At Frankershausen there are some sinkholes ( Kripp and Hielöcher ) due to the leaching of gypsum. The river Berka collects the small streams that come mainly from the Meißner. The Weidenhäuser hill country of the Eschweger Basin connects to the southeast .
