The Breitenborn is a karst spring designated as a natural monument near Berkatal in the Hessian Werra-Meißner district .
Geographical location
The Breitenborn is located in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) about 1.5 km north of the center of the Berkataler district Frankershausen in the Zechstein hill country immediately southwest of the sub-area "Kripplöcher" of the nature reserve Kripp- and Hielöcher ; the “Hielöcher” sub-area is a little further south-west, almost immediately north-west of Frankershausen, whose gypsum and dolomite rocks are fossil remains of the 250 million year old Zechstein Sea . About 100 m further west is another karst spring, the Kressenborn . The outflow of both sources forms the Bornaibach , which already operates the Oberdorfer Mühle after about 200 m and the Blaumühle 500 m further downstream and flows into the Berka in Frankershausen .
Spring water
The spring water of the Breitenborn has a temperature of around 9 to 10 ° C and rises from below in a small spring pot overgrown with water plants . Because of the carbonate solution in the dolomite rocks, it has a high carbonate hardness . With the help of a pipe, the flowing stream is passed under a path.
Borne and Oberndorf desert areas
Not far to the north of the two springs, in the valley floor between Marstein (321 m) and Ellerstein (323 m), there was once the small settlement of Borne , first mentioned in 1301 and described as having fallen in 1498 . The name of the place obviously refers to its close proximity to the two springs.
Around the place of today's Oberdorfer Mühle was the now also desolate small town Oberndorf , which was also created because of its favorable location on the stream.
