The Kripp and Hielöcher holes are a karst landscape designated as a nature reserve (CDDA code 164260) in the municipality of Berkatal in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse .

Geographical location

The Kripp and Hielöcher holes are located in the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) around 5.5 km northeast of the Hoher Meissner , around 1.7 km north of Frankershausen and around 2.2 km (each as the crow flies ) northeast of Frankenhain (districts of Berkatal ). Approximate altitude: 240  m above sea level. NHN .

The geological subsoil of the nature reserve is made up of gypsum and dolomite rocks with sinkholes , deposits of the 250 million year old Zechstein Sea . The protected area covers 17 hectares and consists of two sub-areas, the Kripplöchern located to the north about 1.5 km north of Frankershausen and the Hielöchern located further to the southwest, almost immediately on the northwestern outskirts of Frankershausen. The Kripplöcher are not accessible by roads, you enter without a guide therefore prohibited (in the nature reserve is valid for visitors marked trails ). 1958 collapsed Kuhgespann 31 m deep in the locally since so called Kuhloch .

Flora and fauna

Botanical peculiarities of the local juniper heather are golden thistle , orchids and gentians , as well as species-rich grasslands with wild herbs. Faunal rarities are badger and fox and rare butterflies like the blue and other insects like the ram . The biotopes are grazed with traditional sheep farms (Timmerberg Dudenrode) that produce Meißner lamb products.

Directions and hiking

Three circular hiking trails of 2, 3 and 4.8 km in length lead through the Hielöcher past the natural monuments Kleiner Marstein and Großer Marstein ( 320.9  m ), the karst springs Kressenborn and Breitenborn and the mills Oberdorfer - and Blaumühle . Premium hiking trail 2 “Frankershäuser Karst” also crosses the area .
