The gravel pond under the Aue'schen Kugel is a former gravel mining area in the Eschweg basin . After the end of the gravel, the area was designated as a nature reserve.

Geographical location

The nature reserve consists of two gravel lakes , one and four hectares in size, which are surrounded by a dense, continuous strip of wood . It is located in the district of the city of Wanfried in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse . In the north it is bounded by the Werra , from which the lakes are separated by an approximately twenty meter wide dam. To the east, an area of ​​arable land extends to the reserve and to the west there are other gravel ponds that are used as fishing ponds. The protected area ends to the south on the cycle path from Wanfried to Aue . The cycle path runs here in a narrowed area close to the state road 3244 below the Aue'schen Kugel, a 274 m high elevation on the northeastern foothills of the Schlierbachswald .

In terms of natural space , the area is assigned to the “Untere Werraland” as a sub-unit “Treffurt-Wanfrieder Werratal” , which belongs to the main unit group “ Osthessisches Bergland ”.

Protected position

After the gravel mining was completed, the area around the remaining water surface was designated as a nature reserve in December 1984. The protection goal for water birds and especially their endangered species was to secure an undisturbed breeding and resting area. The protected area with the national identifier 1636011 and the WDPA code 164091 has a size of 9.31 hectares and also belongs as a sub-area to the "Auenverbund Werra" landscape protection area, which was designated in 1992 . As part of the landscape protection area, near-natural sections of water in the districts of Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Werra-Meißner are to be preserved and restored.

Tourist development

The area around the lakes is intended as an undisturbed quiet zone and cannot be entered. A cycle path, the Werra Valley cycle path on the left and the detour variant of the Herkules-Wartburg cycle path , passes directly on the southern border of the protected area . The water surfaces cannot be seen from the cycle path.
