The Mönchesrieth near Grebendorf is a former gravel mining area in the Eschweger basin . In order to secure the area that has become a habitat for a large number of birds after the end of the gravel, the remaining water surface with its banks was designated as a nature reserve.

Geographical location

The monks Rieth is situated in the districts of My Harder districts Grebendorf and Schwebda in northern Hesse Werra-Meissner . In the south it is bordered by a cycle and farm lane along federal highway 249 . To the east and north, arable land extends to the protected area. Immediately next to it on the western border is a mining area that is still being worked on. In terms of natural space , the area is assigned to the “Lower Werraland” as a sub-unit called “Schwebda-Jestädter Werraaue” , which belongs to the main unit group “ Osthessisches Bergland ”.

After the gravel mining was completed, the water area was designated as a nature reserve in October 1999. The protection objective was to secure the area as a breeding, resting and feeding biotope for endangered bird species. The bank areas should be designed as a habitat for endangered plant and animal species and disruptions should be minimized through suitable measures. The protected area with the national identifier 1636037 and the WDPA code 318800 has a size of 18.07 hectares.

Tourist development

The area is intended as an undisturbed quiet zone and should not be entered. A dirt road runs along the east and north sides of the reserve. An asphalt cycle and farm path leads past to the south.
