The gravel pond near Frieda on the right side of the Werra is a relic of a gravel mining area in the Eschweg basin . After the end of the gravel, the area developed into a habitat for species that are bound to the water. Because of its great importance as a disturbance-free biotope , the water surface with the bank areas was declared a nature reserve in 1988 .

Geographical location

The nature reserve is located in the district Frieda of the municipality of Meinhard in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse . It is bounded by the Werra to the south and south-east. To the north-west, the protected area extends to the old railway embankment of the former Werra Valley Railway next to federal highway 249 . The protected area is bordered by arable land to the east and west.

In terms of natural space, it is assigned to the "Schwebda-Jestädter Werraaue" in the lower Werraland , which belongs to the main unit group of the East Hessian Uplands .

Protected position

With an ordinance of July 22, 1988, the pond immediately next to the Werra was designated as a nature reserve in order to preserve and secure it as an amphibian spawning area and as a resting and breeding area for water birds . The protected area with a size of 6.57 hectares has the national identification 1636017 and the WDPA code 164089. As a sub-area, the Kiesteich belongs to the "Auenverbund Werra" landscape protection area, with the near-natural sections of water in the districts of Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Werra -Missner to be preserved and restored.

The water surface of the pond, which was created in the mid-1930s through gravel extraction, is framed by a belt of reeds and trees . On the former farmlands around the pond have over the years in the course of succession , first species-rich grassland and Hochstaudenfluren designed by the regrowth of woody plants in a Vorwaldstadium have passed. The pond and its bank areas, like the nearby Kiesteich nature reserve under the Aue'schen Kugel , have an important function as a trouble-free breeding, resting and feeding area for water birds. The typical bird species that have been detected in the water and in the tree populations include relatively undemanding and frequent species as well as rare species that are severely threatened and endangered.

A large population of the common toad spawns in the gravel pond and winters in the Eichenberg nature reserve near Frieda on the other side of the road to the north . In order to reduce traffic losses, permanent barriers were installed along the newly built B 249 to prevent toads and species of frogs and newts from crossing. You have to walk along the guide barriers and get to amphibious tunnels in which you can safely cross the street.

Tourist development

The nature reserve is not accessible by paths and the water surface cannot be seen from the outside.
