List of grape varieties

The Grünfränkisch is a grape variety from which white wine is pressed . The development of the Green Franconian goes back to antiquity. In the High Middle Ages , settlers brought the vine from the Carpathian Basin via Hungary to the area on the Rhine . The grape variety was first mentioned in the Palatinate in the 16th century . After that, the grape variety was de facto extinct.

prehistory

Philipp Cuntz (1900-1977) accidentally discovered a vine in his vineyard in Schweigen-Rechtenbach that did not match the surrounding Pinot Blanc . He propagated this grape variety. The resulting wine was surprisingly different and is still not comparable to any of the regionally grown wines. Investigations by the State Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture in Neustadt showed that the grape variety had not been recorded by ampelography until then and could not be assigned to any known grape family.

From 1999 onwards, the grapes from Weinhof Scheu, led by Klaus Scheu, Philipp Cuntz's grandson, were vinified in trial cultivation and bottled under the name "Philipp Cuntz". At the same time, a vineyard was discovered near Landau in the Palatinate in 2008 , which was planted almost entirely single-variety with Green Franconian under the label Pinot Blanc from the Sauer winery.

Rediscovery

The grape variety Grünfränkisch was rediscovered in 2009 by the qualified biologist Andreas Jung. The Ampelograph , who specializes in historical wine varieties, and the vine refiner Ulrich Martin, based on documents, deciphered the vine as Green Franconian. Andreas Jung is of the opinion that from a 300 year old description of the variety it can be deduced that the actual grape variety of Liebfrauenmilch was not Riesling , but rather Green Franconian .

DNA analyzes were carried out at the Julius Kühn Institute between 2014 and 2016 . According to these, the variety comes from a presumably natural cross between Auxerrois × Kövidinka .
