The 17 barrows from the Hallstatt period are located 1750 meters northeast of the Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Peter and Paul on the right bank of the Altmühl . They are still clearly visible in the Altmühl lowlands as flat elevations.

Five hills were excavated from 1881 to 1884 by Heinrich Eidam (1849–1934). The largest one contained the remains of a car grave : parts of the wheel hubs and tires and fittings from the car body covered with iron and bronze sheets , as well as bone fragments and two vessels.

Only a few finds have survived from the excavations in the other hills. They also contained two subsequent Roman burials .
