Grace is an American horror film by Paul Solet from the year 2009 . It is based on a short film of the same name and is about the mother Madeline, who loses her husband and child after a car accident. After a stillbirth, the baby she names Grace suddenly wakes up miraculously and becomes very hungry - but not for milk.

action

Madeline and Michael are expecting children, but an accident occurs during a car trip in which Michael and the baby die. Nevertheless, Madeline wants to continue carrying it, although it is certain that it will be a stillbirth . When labor is initiated, the baby is born dead, as expected. Madeline refuses to accept this, however, and after a short period of silence "Grace" comes to life.

Madeline is overjoyed, but the joy doesn't last long. Grace keeps biting into Madeline's chest, and it is revealed that Grace is no ordinary child. Flies are buzzing around her room, she smells strange, gets a strange rash and then it becomes clear that Grace is not after breast milk . From then on, Madeline "feeds" Grace with animal blood, while she herself becomes weaker and paler. However, she does not want to go to the hospital and instead desperately seeks help from Patricia, her old friend and midwife , but Patricia's assistant, who takes Madeline's calls, hides this. Meanwhile, Michael's mother Vivian is trying to get custody of the child by telling Dr. Son tasked with seeing that Madeline is portrayed as an incompetent mother.

While examining Madeline, he hears Grace screaming through the baby monitor . Since he suspects she is sick, he goes upstairs. Madeline wants to prevent this, kills Dr. Son accidentally. Madeline tries to hide the body in the bathroom, but when Dr. Son does not report to Vivian, she becomes suspicious and drives to Madeline's house. Meanwhile, Madeline is trying to get Dr. To fill the bottle with son's blood to feed the still screaming Grace. Vivian comes into the house through the unlocked door and Madeline falls the bottle out of her hand and splinters on the floor.

After talking to Madeline downstairs, Vivian goes into Grace's room and takes her with her. Then she hides in the bathroom, where she finds the body of Dr. Son discovered. She arms herself with a hammer and threatens Madeline with it. She tries to convince Vivian that Grace is a special child and needs special food. Shortly afterwards, Patricia also goes to Madeline's house. Vivian hits Madeline's head with the hammer out of anger, causing her to lie bleeding and motionless on the floor. As Vivian bends over her, Madeline wakes up and hits Vivian's head with the hammer after biting her neck. Then she passes out again. Shortly afterwards, Patricia comes into the house through the back door and finds the dead Vivian, the still passed out Madeline and Grace.

Some time later, Patricia is seen driving a caravan on the highway. She stops at a gas station. She goes to the back of the trailer, where Madeline is sitting on a bed with Grace in her arms. Patricia suddenly notices a puddle of blood on the floor, whereupon she looks at Madeline worried. She looks with the words "She needs more now - she's teething." At her chest, from which Grace has bitten a few pieces.

criticism

"Grace" is an awkward horror drama. The story is quite simple and the narrative is rather calm. The action develops slowly and gets more and more moving as the running time increases. The horror is more on the psychological level, with a few scenes being designed a bit more bloody, and you manage to build up an increasingly uncomfortable and eerie atmosphere here. The actors do their thing very well.

"Grace" is a nasty little horror drama and well worth a look.

Horror films with babies are almost predestined to give audiences goose bumps. Similar to the genre classics Rosemarie's Baby or It's Alive, Solet's stripes deliberately pushes the limits of horror; after all, even with Grace, the most innocent living being - a newborn baby - becomes pure evil.

However, the viewer does not find out why this is happening. Writer and director Solet prefers to focus solely on showing how this happens. He certainly does not miss his goal of shocking the audience. Because Grace is a dark and oppressive horror film that should leave even genre fans with a queasy feeling in the stomach. And yet, unfortunately, a lot of potential was given away here. Therefore, even the strong arc of tension fizzles out too quickly thanks to the many holes in the plot.

Character drawing was handled similarly. For example, a lot of importance is attached to the fact that the protagonists appear more and more mysterious over time and take on increasingly absurd traits, but Solet vehemently does not want to give us an explanation for this. All that remains is an extremely illogical, but at least effective horror shocker.
