The castle Megling is the ruins of a hilltop castle on 540  m above sea level. NN above the Stampflberg about 200 meters above the Inn on the district Au am Inn of the market Gars am Inn in the district of Mühldorf am Inn in Bavaria . The former keep of the castle, a box-shaped three-storey building with a steep half-hipped roof, has been preserved and is now also known as Stampfl Castle or Stampflschlössl . The castle with the residential tower was built by Count Kuno II von Megling in 1123. Kuno II was guardian of the monasteries Gars and Au am Inn.

history

Until the beginning of the 13th century, the Counts of Megling sat in their ancestral castle and exercised the bailiwick through the Augustinian canons monastery Au am Inn and Kloster Gars .

Today, humpback blocks still bear witness to the defensive strength of the hilltop castle, which is protected on three sides by steep slopes. According to legend, robber barons are said to have cordoned off the Inn with iron chains in order to plunder the passing ships. There is also said to have been a secret passage down to the Inn that was buried today. The count family of the Meglingers was related and related by marriage to the following noble families: Counts of Frontenhausen-Lechsgemünd, Counts of Rott, Counts of Tegernbach, Counts of Appiano (Hocheppan South Tyrol), Counts of Falkenstein-Weyarn, Counts of Vohburg. The Counts of Megling had an entourage of 25 knights in western Isengau and died out in 1205–1213 without male descendants.
