The 23rd Grand Prix d'Ouverture La Marseillaise took place on January 30, 2011. It was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2011 and within this category 1.1 and was also the opening race of the Coupe de France 2011. The total distance of the bike race was 139.7 kilometers. The Grand Prix La Marseillaise was the first one-day race on European soil in the 2011 season.

Participants and course of the race

At the start were the largest French teams - including the ProTeam Ag2r La Mondiale and the Professional Continental Teams FDJ , Team Europcar , Cofidis, le Crédit en Ligne , Saur-Sojasun and Bretagne-Schuller . In addition, the foreign ProTeams Katusha and Vacansoleil-DCM as well as the Professional Continental Teams Skil-Shimano , Veranda's Willems-Accent , Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator , Landbouwkrediet and Team Type 1-Sanofi Aventis started . The Continental teams Big Mat-Auber 93 , An Post-Sean Kelly , Roubaix Lille Métropole and VC La Pomme Marseille also received invitations.

The short race started in the Marseilles suburb of Allauch and led in a large loop through the eastern foreland of the city. The goal was near the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille . With the Col du petit Galibier , the Col de l'Espigoulier and the Col des Bastides , there were three notable climbs on the program before a descent led to the destination. Shortly after the start, a breakaway group with Jérémy Roy ( FDJ ), Sylvain Georges ( Big Mat-Auber 93 ) and Julien Guay from Roubaix Lille Métropole pulled away. About 40 kilometers from the finish, Guay fell back, eleven kilometers later Roy attacked and was able to distance Georges. Roy confidently brought a lead of over two and a half minutes to the finish line in Marseille, while Georges was able to save only a few seconds from the onrushing peloton around third-placed Romain Feillu .
