Graskop is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga . It is located in the municipality of Thaba Chweu in the Ehlanzeni district .
geography
Graskop has 3,996 inhabitants (2011 census). The most important languages are Afrikaans with 29% and Sepedi with 22%.
The city lies on the Great Escarpment in the northern foothills of the Drakensberg . The climate is temperate and there is high rainfall. In summer the place is often in clouds.
history
Graskop was founded in the 1880s in what was then the Transvaal as a camp for gold miners in nearby Pilgrim's Rest . The name comes from Afrikaans and means “tip of grass”.
Economy and Transport
Tourism plays an important role. To the northeast, God's Window is on the Panorama Route , from where you can see 700 meters deep into the Lowveld . The Pinnacle is a rock needle near the precipice. Graskop and its surrounding forests are important in forestry.
Graskop is on the R532 road, which connects the town with Sabie in the south and is part of the Panorama Route, and the R533 which runs west to Pilgrim's Rest.
