The Swallowtail Swallow ( Glareola cinerea ) is a bird from the subfamily of the Curly Swallow- like (Glareolidae).

It occurs along large rivers and coasts from Mali and Niger to Ghana , Cameroon , the extreme south of Chad , the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the northwest of Angola .

She was spotted once as a random visitor in Burundi .

The range includes sandbars in larger, slow-flowing rivers.

description

The graubrachschwalbe is 18-20 cm tall and weighs about 37 g. The top is pale gray with a gray part and a maroon neck. Under a white over-eye stripe, a narrow black eye-stripe is curved behind the eye and delimits the white throat. The hull is white. The beak, like the legs, is orange with a black tip. In flight a black, white and gray wing pattern is noticeable.

The male's call is described as a series of quick “zi-zi-zi” calls.

Way of life

The food consists of flies , beetles , small grasshoppers and spiders , which are usually captured in flight over the water. The gray swallow hunts mainly in the evening and likes to hunt in groups.

The breeding season is between March and May in Niger, March and June in Nigeria , February in Gabon , February to March and June to August in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Danger

The gray swallow is considered not endangered ( Least Concern ).
