The Graukogel is a mountain with a 2492  m high peak in the Hohe Tauern in the Austrian state of Salzburg . The Graukogel belongs to the Ankogel group .

history

A first ascent is not documented because the Graukogel can be reached relatively easily from Bad Gastein. The first documented use as a ski sports facility dates back to 1908 and is a ski race from the Reichebenalm. The first cable car on the Graukogel was built in 1946 and ran roughly on the route of today's Graukogel lift 1.

Ascent

From Bad Gastein, the ascent of the Graukogel takes about 6 hours. At the mountain station of the Graukogel lift 2, the ascent is indicated as 1.5 hours and difficult. The path leads from the mountain station under the ropes of the Recheben lift steeply over meadows above the tree line, then over a scree field to a pre-summit and over a very short ridge until you reach the summit ascent.

Surname

It can be assumed that the name of the mountain refers to the color of the rock on the mountain and the scree field in front of it, both of which are relatively recognizable.

Ski Area

On the Graukogel there is a ski area of the same name, it is one of two in Bad Gastein. The lifts end roughly at the tree line and thus far below the summit of the Graukogel.
