Grave Ritual is an American death metal band from Montgomery , Alabama that was formed in 2009.

history

The band was formed in 2009 from the break-up of the group Meathole Infection. In the same year, a first self-titled demo was released . The following year, the debut album Euphoric Hymns from the Altar of Death was released on Dark Descent Records . This was followed by appearances, among others together with Proclamation , Revenge , Black Witchery and Inquisition . The band also performed at various festivals such as the second and third Rites of Darkness and the Destroying Texas Fest. In addition, the band relocated to New Orleans . In October 2015, the second album Morbid Throne was released on Dark Descent Records.

style

In an interview with Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard , Ryan Evans stated that the song Throne of Continuum from the album Morbid Throne is about how the universe expands until everything freezes and gravity no longer holds anything together. He also put forward the theory that in the middle of the universe there is a black hole in which a deity lives, matter and life are completely the same. Autonomous Death is about the destruction of the soul and about the fact that the end of life is the beginning of a new one. According to Schiffmann, the song Invoker of Heathen Gnosis has occult features. Evans then stated that he had a strong interest in different faiths. However, he is not a fan of Gnosticism , but prefers "what is far back in time or has to do with esotericism ". In addition, he does not like to limit himself to Abrahamic symbolism. Since black- and death-metal often as much about Jesus Christ would talk like a preacher of the Baptist , he just try in his texts disturbing possible metaphors to process. In modern occultism there is too much “ hippie nonsense” for him , whereas he is looking for destruction and chaos. To Schiffmann, Lewd Perversities sounds a lot like Morbid Angel , which, according to Evans, happened on purpose. Behind the Reigns of God is about the manipulation of the people through politics and religion . In the same issue, Schiffmann reviewed Morbid Throne and heard influences from Incantation, Repulsion and Demigod . The band play simple but effective Death Metal with low pitched guitars. The songs would live primarily from the guttural singing and the song structures, whereas tempo changes and dynamics would be neglected.
