The Great Trango Tower is the highest peak of the Trango Towers at 6287  m .

location

It is located on the north side of the Baltoro Glacier in the Baltoro Muztagh in the Karakoram . This mountain has three minor peaks that are almost equally high.

Ascent history

The first ascent of the summit was made on July 21, 1977 by Galen Rowell , John Roskelley , Kim Schmitz , James Morrissey and Dennis Hennek . The ascent route led from the Trango Glacier over the so-called Pulpit ( English for “pulpit”) and the south face to the summit.

With a wall height of around 1,600 m, the east face of the Great Trango Tower is one of the highest vertical falls in the world. It was first climbed in 1984 by the Norwegians Hans Christian Doseth and Finn Dæhli . Both climbers died on the descent. Since then there have been few attempts to climb this wall. The easiest route to the summit, however, is not considered particularly difficult.

Minor peaks

The Great Trango has a secondary peak, the 6231  m high Great Trango East .
