Greg Herbert
Gregory Delano "Greg" Herbert (born May 19, 1947 in Philadelphia , † January 31, 1978 in Amsterdam ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , flutes ).
Live and act
Herbert started playing the alto saxophone when he was twelve. In 1964 he played briefly with the Duke Ellington Orchestra before studying music at Temple University between 1965 and 1971 . 1968 recordings were made with Pat Martino ( Baiyina ). Herbert eventually dropped out to play with Woody Herman and His Orchestra , with whom he made a guest appearance at the 1974 Montreux Jazz Festival . In 1975 he was singled out as a soloist in a recording session of the Harold Danko Quartet. From 1975 to 1977 he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra . He has also worked with Chuck Israels ' National Jazz Ensemble , Johnny Coles and Chet Baker .
Herbert, who died of drug abuse on tour with Blood, Sweat & Tears in Amsterdam in 1978 , took part in 31 recording sessions between 1964 and 1977.
