Greg Smith (* 9. June 1989 in West Reading , Pennsylvania as Gregory Robert Smith ) is a former American prodigy and political activist.

Life

Smith is the only child of microbiologist Robert Smith and Janet Smith, a former director of the Academy of Performing Arts, both of whom have an IQ of around 140 (dial type not given; Washington Post ). At 14 months Greg was able to quote / reproduce the content of books. At 18 months he could add and subtract, at two he knew all known dinosaurs by heart. For the first six years he went to school with his peers, but was so mentally ahead of them that school was just boring for him. His IQ is within the upper 0.25 / 0.5 percent, beyond what can be measured by normal tests. The family moved to Florida, and when he was only 10 and after two years of high school, he graduated from Orange Park High School in Jacksonville .

Smith received his BA in mathematics, cum laude , on a full scholarship from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland , Virginia, at age 13 . He received a Masters of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia in May 2006, at the age of 16. A year later, to protect his privacy, Smith closed his official website and began studying molecular genetics at the University of Oregon . Shortly thereafter, he enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University in the Faculty of Biology.

In 2015 he received his PhD in biology from CMU and then took on a post-doc position at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Political activity

During the semester break and on weekends, he traveled around the world and campaigned for children's rights in public speeches. He founded International Youth Advocates , an organization that promotes peace and understanding among young people in the world. He propagated "peaceful parenting" - a term he coined himself - in which parents raise their children lovingly and do not allow them to be exposed to violent situations, not even in films, television programs or computer games. When he spoke to groups of children, he tried to convince them that learning is not only for "nerds" and "geeks". He organized humanitarian aid projects for children in East Timor , Brazil and Kenya .

In the course of his political activities, he also met personalities such as Mikhail Gorbachev , Bill Clinton , Queen Nūr of Jordan and Nobel Peace Prize laureates such as Bishop Desmond Tutu and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize himself .
