Gregor Breitkopf

Gregor Breitkopf (* around 1472 in Konitz , Polish-Prussia , † January 20, 1529 in Leipzig ), also known as Gregor Bredekoph , Gregor Brethekopf , Gregorius Bredekopf , Gregorius Laticephalus de Konitz and Gregorius Prutenus , was a German humanist .

Live and act

Breitkopf attended the University of Leipzig since 1490 and acquired various academic degrees there, including a doctorate in the Baccalaureus artium in 1494 , then in 1497 the doctorate in the Magister artium, in 1523 the doctorate theologiae and in 1523 the doctorate in the Licentiatus theologiae.

After he had been awarded the title of 'Magister of World Wisdom', Magister philosophiae, in 1498 , he held lectures. In 1503 he was accepted into the artist faculty . During his 25 years in Leipzig he was five times vice rector , twice dean and once (in the winter semester 1508/1509) rector of the university.

His church career began in 1493 with the acolyte ordination , followed by the diaconal ordination in 1502 both in Merseburg and the ordination of priests in 1503 in Leipzig.

From 1500 to 1514 he belonged to the Marienkolleg in Leipzig, later to the small Fürstenkolleg . From the summer of 1508 he read for two semesters on astronomy ("Spheram et theorias planetarum"). He was a listener to Martin Fuhrmann . In the disputation between Martin Luther and Johannes Eck in 1519 he was elected disputator. After becoming a licentiate in 1523 and earning the degree of Doctor of Theology, he later moved to the Faculty of Theology. Breitkopf was considered an important scholastic logician. He published philosophical writings and edited works by classical Latin authors such as Horace , Tibullus and Seneca .
