Gregory II. Rottenkolber
Gregor II. Rottenkolber (born November 10, 1750 in Deutenhofen , † February 13, 1810 in Tegernsee ) was the last abbot of the Tegernsee monastery .
Life
Martin Rottenkolber was born on the Jacklhof in Deutenhofen, which belongs to the Altomünster monastery , and studied theology at the Lyceum in Freising . He took his vows in 1775 (his religious name was Gregory) and became a priest in 1777. From 1780 to 1782 he was professor of dogmatics and morals in the Tegernsee monastery and became abbot of the same on December 4, 1787 (with the title “Primate Bavariae”). He strove for the higher scientific education of his monks, sent them to study at various universities and had well-known masters come to Tegernsee. The Tegernsee monk Heinrich Braun was an important educational and school reformer in the Electorate of Bavaria in his day . However , Rottenkolber could not prevent the abolition of his abbey in the course of secularization in Bavaria in 1803. The abbot, who had suffered from a nervous disease since 1801, was even accused of "kidnapping state property" and initially lived under arrest in Niederaltaich Monastery (April 14 to October 18, 1803). Finally he and his 20 conventuals were able to acquire part of the monastery buildings and lived there with them until his death in 1810.
