Gregory Masurovsky (born November 26, 1929 in the Bronx , New York City , USA , † July 17, 2009 in Paris , France ) was an American draftsman , graphic artist , etcher , lithographer and book illustrator .

life and work

Gregory Masurovsky was born in a black neighborhood in the Bronx a month after the Great Depression began in the United States. Gregory Masurovsky studied at the Art Students League in New York. After several years in New York, Gregory Masurovsky moved to Paris in 1954 , where he lived until his death.

He returned to the United States for a short time, teaching drawing at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design from 1966 to 1967 and at the American Center in Paris and other art schools in Europe from 1980 to 1987 . He participated in the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1969. Gregory Masurovsky also made several short films about his art.

Since 1957 Masurovsky had numerous solo exhibitions, among others in New York, Cleveland , Paris , Bern , Munich and Frankfurt am Main . In 1961 he won the Critics' Prize for drawing at the Biennale de Paris , in 1963 he received the International Jury Prize for etching at the following Paris Biennale. He was the recipient of the William Copley Foundation Grant in 1963 and 1964 and had an extensive solo exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels . In 1964 he was a participant in documenta III in Kassel in the famous hand drawings department .

Gregory Masurovsky died in Paris on July 17, 2009.

Gregory Masurovsky has been considered one of the leading artists of surreal and fantastic drawing for many years. His original etchings and lithographs are in the collections of numerous public galleries in America and Europe. The Museum of Modern Art in New York owns one of the largest collections of Gregory Masurovsky original prints.
