The old-headed parrot ( Pionus seniloides ) belongs to the genus of the red-faced parrots . Some authors - including the South American Classification Committee - classify the old-headed parrot as a subspecies to the rose-headed parrot despite genetic differences . Others are of the opinion that the species Pionus tumultuosus and P. seniloides represent a very plastic species complex, in which they also include P. seniloides . In general, however, the independence of the species is not doubted.

Distribution area

The old-headed parrot inhabits an area that extends from the mountainous regions in northwestern Venezuela , west to the Andes in Colombia and south to Ecuador . The distribution extends to the border of Peru .

features

The old-headed parrot reaches a total length of 30 centimeters. The basic plumage is green and is paler on the underside. The feathers on the forehead and crown are grayish-white and have orange-red tips. The feathers on the crown, neck and sides of the neck have a white base, a gray-blue central part and black-violet edges. The plumage on the rear neck is pinkish white. On the ear covers, the feathers are dark gray with pink centers. The reins and cheek feathers are white with gray borders. Behind the cheeks, the hems get darker. The feathers of the face of the cheeks are sometimes lined with orange-red. The feathers on the throat band are pink, towards the chest the feathers turn reddish-mauve. In the abdominal area, the feathers then turn brown. The feathers of the under tail cover are red, the outer feathers are green with matt purple tips and red markings at the base. The middle tail feathers are also green. The under wing coverts and undersides of the wings are dull green. The beak is pale olive yellow. The iris is brown and the feet are green-gray.

The young birds look similar to the adults, but their head plumage is still green with white feather bases. The crown feathers also have dull green hems. The feathers on the side of the neck are white with green edges. The throat and breast feathers are also green but with matt, mauve centers.

Way of life

These parrots are inhabitants of the forests in the tropical and temperate zones of the Andes. They can also be found in cloud forests, in forests with loosened trees and on the slopes of river valleys at an altitude of between 1900 and 3000 meters. In Colombia, the species occurs mainly on the western side of the Andes. They live together in swarms or in small family groups.
