Grenadier ( Japanese グ レ ネ ー ダ ー , Gurenēdā ) is a manga series by Sōsuke Kaise , which was published from 2003 to 2005. The manga was translated into German and English and adapted as a 12-part anime series.
action
During the feudal period, the people of Japan suffered from the atrocities of a civil war in which the traditional samurai and the senshi, warriors with modern firearms, fight each other mercilessly. Rushuna Tendo ( 天道 琉 朱 菜 ), a 16-year-old, pretty girl, has been sent on a journey by her empress to spread the "ultimate fighting strategy" and to put an end to the fighting. It should make people understand that you can break your opponent's will to fight just by smiling and thereby avoid bloodshed. Rushuna is a very talented Senshi, which she often has to prove on her journey. She meets the young samurai Yajiro Kojima ( 虎 島 弥 次郎 ), who joins her.
While Rushuna and Yajiro are traveling, a rebellion takes place unnoticed in the country's capital, Tento. The wise Empress Tenshi is replaced by a doppelganger who is the opposite of the previous ruler. She wants to restore order in the country through conquest and the use of feared grenadiers. She also puts a bounty on Rushuna, which means that many bandits and the 10 enlightened ones from Tento , also known as lightning fighters, are after her. The little girl Mikan Kurenai ( 紅 み か ん ) joins them on their journey . Together they master all dangers to finally return to the capital and confront the empress.
After the real empress is freed, Rushuna has to face Setsuna Oomido, the empress's doppelganger. Rushuna can make use of the experience gained on the trip. Yajiro also has a tough opponent. He must fight against his old leader Kaizan Doushi. However, both manage to defeat their opponents using the ultimate combat strategy. Tenshi takes the throne again and Rushuna, Yajiro and Mikan continue their journey.
Publications
The manga was published from 2003 to 2005 in the manga magazine Shōnen Ace by the publishing house Kadokawa Shoten . The individual chapters were published between July 1, 2003 and May 26, 2005 in seven tankōbon .
Tokyopop published the manga in English and from 2006 to 2008 in German. The translation is by Claudia Peter.
Anime adaptation
Hiroshi Kōjina directed the anime series produced by animation studios Group TAC and Studio Live . The character design was created by Hideki Inoue and the artistic direction was taken over by Yukio Abe. The series ran from October 15, 2004 to January 14, 2005 shortly after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on the Japanese television station WOWOW .
The anime aired in English through Too Much For TV and in Spanish through Buzz Channel . A French translation was of Wakanim and Gong as a stream published. The series has also been translated into Russian, Chinese and Polish. A German version was released on four DVDs from July 2006 to October 2007 by Tokyopop .

music
The music for the series was composed by Yasunori Iwasaki. The opening credits are Kohaku by Mikuni Shimokawa and Akatsuki no Sora wo Kakeru by Hiromi Sato. Kanashimi ni Makenaide and Hana no Youni by the same artists were used for the credits .
reception
According to the AnimaniA for the German release of the series, the anime offers “entertaining samurai food with the ingredients comedy and action, seasoned with a good portion of fan service ” as well as a “freaky mecha design” . The computer animations are used well in the fight scenes, apart from that the series would be kept rather simple optically. The German dubbing is well cast in the important roles.
