The Klingenbach border crossing is not far from the municipality of the same name Klingenbach in Burgenland ( Austria ) and is a road border crossing on the border with Hungary .

On the Hungarian side, this border crossing is called Sopron after the Hungarian town of the same name Sopron (German Ödenburg ) in Győr-Moson-Sopron County .

Not far from this border crossing, the Pan-European Picnic took place on August 19, 1989 . This border crossing was one of the main crossing points for refugee citizens of the GDR from the opening of the border on September 12, 1989 by the government of the People's Republic of Hungary .

Near the border crossing is the highest point of the Neusiedlersee Radmarathon with an altitude of 277 meters .

Since the introduction of the Schengen Agreement and the resulting shifting of the EU external border, the border crossing is no longer manned and there are no more border and customs clearances . It can be reached via the south-east motorway (A3), which has not yet been fully expanded to the border crossing, and connects the B16 or the planned Hungarian motorway 85 (currently state road 85). Due to the traffic restrictions in Sopron, this crossing is only for vehicles up to max. 20 t gross vehicle weight passable. Vehicles that exceed this weight must use the Deutschkreutz border crossing and reach state road 84 again in Kópháza (German coal yard ). The remaining Ödenburger Bundesstraße (B16) and the border crossing are exempt from the night driving ban in Austria .

In 2000, around 10,000 vehicles passed this border crossing every day, which has now increased to around 15,000 a day. Therefore, the motorway was originally supposed to be completed on the Hungarian side to Pereszteg . On the Austrian side, too, the further expansion of the road section between the end of the A3 and the border crossing is planned. This expansion should include the continuation of the A3 from the Eisenstadt junction to the Klingenbach border crossing , which should supplement a connection to the planned large-scale bypass of Sopron. After it has been opened to traffic, the existing 20-tonne weight limit for trucks on the Hungarian side is to be suspended. In April 2009, ASFINAG and the provincial government of Burgenland agreed not to submit the preliminary project to obtain a regulation on the federal road planning area, but to hold further talks due to the resistance of the neighboring communities.
