action

17 year old Greta is clever, pretty, rebellious and sarcastic. In a small notebook that acts as her diary, she records what she would like to experience before she dies and what methods there are to commit suicide.

During the school holidays, her mother sends her to her grandparents in New Jersey in New Jersey, in what Greta's point of view is a desolate small town, Ocean Grove , to have time for herself and to save her third marriage. As soon as Greta arrives in Ocean Grove by coach, she messes with her grandparents and the neighborhood. But when she gets hired as a waitress in a restaurant, life in the small town begins to get more interesting. She begins to fall in love with the local chef, Julie, who was previously in jail for stealing a car but is now determined to lead a better life and later open his own restaurant. A summer romance begins, and Greta even befriends her grandparents a little. When she, driven by longing for death , hooked her foot in the anchor line during a boat trip with her grandparents and Julie in order to be pulled down to the seabed , Julie rescued her at the last second. During this near-disaster, her grandmother had a heart attack and had to be taken to hospital. When Julie confronts Greta with the fact that he is not ready to continue to endanger his life around Greta, she begins to understand how much influence her behavior has on her surroundings and others and begins to change. When suddenly her mother shows up, who was asked by Greta's grandfather by phone to pick up Greta for the benefit of her grandmother, the situation almost escalates. Greta's mother plans to send her daughter to a boot camp , which neither the grandparents nor Greta, who would rather stay in Ocean Grove, are enthusiastic about. The grandfather manages to defuse the situation by suggesting that the matter be resolved as a family. Then both Greta and her mother stay with their grandparents for the next few weeks, spend a lot of time together and look at old family photos in which Greta first sees her father, who took his own life with a gun in Greta's childhood and then was found by Greta. Greta's notebook and the lists in it seem to be a result of this trauma. Finally, after spending time with her family and being friends with Julie, she manages to part with her notebook.

dvdrental.ch saw an "ambitious, atmospheric teenage drama " in which Hilary Duff in particular " cuts an astonishingly good figure as a depressive confrontational brat" . The "brilliantly observed, sensitively told and successfully tried to avoid cliché traps, family drama, teenage self-discovery and girl love film" is a "tip for women of all ages and friends of sophisticated entertainment" .
