Greta Meyer (born August 7, 1883 in the German Empire , † October 8, 1965 in Gardena , California , United States ) was a German-American film and theater actress .

Life

Greta Meyer comes from a famous theater family in Germany, comparable to the Barrymore family of actors .

Meyer, whose career began in Dutch and German silent films, emigrated to the USA in 1923 on board a German steamship and was naturalized. She made notable appearances in the films De jantjes (Netherlands, 1922) and The Royal Lodge (USA, 1929). She starred in numerous Hollywood films from 1933 to 1942 , for example The Great Waltz (1938) and Bitter Sweet (1940).

In 1963, their home at 505 North Westmount Drive in West Hollywood, California was evicted because the owners wanted to build a new home. Fearing for her stored mementos from her acting life, she protested against this coercive measure, but ultimately had to accept the eviction. She moved in with a friend, but had little space there for her collection, so she considered returning to Germany. But that never happened, she died in Gardena at the age of 82 .
