Greyfriars Cemetery

The Greyfriars Cemetery is a cemetery in the Scottish city of Perth in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1965 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2009.

history

The cemetery goes back to a monastery of the Franciscan Order (Greyfriars), which was founded on the site in 1460. With the Reformation in the course of the 16th century, all the monasteries in Scotland were dissolved. In 1580 the former monastery area was rededicated as a cemetery. Since Oliver Cromwell needed the stone material of the monastery and the early tombs to build a south-facing citadel ( Cromwell's Citadel ) in the 1650s, only a few monuments have survived from this period. It is estimated that around 300 monuments were lost in the process. In 1795 the cemetery was expanded and around 1835 it was enclosed by a stone wall. Around this time, the cemetery was structured by arranging the tombs and made accessible through paths. The last burial in Greyfriars Cemetery was in 1978. Between 1999 and 2001 the cemetery was restored. The Heritage Lottery Fund also provided funding for this purpose.
