Grigori Abramowitsch Schain ( Russian Григорий Абрамович Шайн ; born April 19, 1892 in Odessa , † August 4, 1956 in Moscow ) was a Soviet astronomer . His last name is often recorded as Shayn in modern English literature , but his astronomical accomplishments go under the name of G. Shajn. Another common spelling is Schajn .
life and work
Shain was the husband of Pelageja Feodorovna Shain (Пелагея Фёдоровна Шайн), also a Russian astronomer.
Schain worked in the field of astro spectroscopy and the physics of gas nebulae . Together with Otto von Struve , he studied the rapid rotation of stars of young spectral classes and measured the radial velocity of stars. He discovered new gas nebulae and anomalous isotopic abundance of 13 C in stellar atmospheres.
Schain became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1939 and was also a member of numerous foreign organizations such as the Royal Astronomical Society . From 1945 to 1952 he was director of the Crimean Observatory .
He discovered some asteroids and was a co-discoverer of the non-periodic comet C / 1925 F1 (Shajn-Comas Solá), also known as Comet 1925 VI or Comet 1925a. The periodic comet 61P / Shajn-Schaldach was not discovered by him, but by his wife.
Membership and Honors
In 1947 Schain was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
The lunar crater Shayn and the asteroid (1648) Shajna were named after him and his wife.
