The great African bulldog bat ( Tadarida ventralis ) is a bat in the fold-lipped bat genus . It has a large distribution area in East Africa , although the number of finds is small. Most of the specimens were dead when found.

features

As the German name suggests, the species is a large folding-lipped bat with a total length of 14.2 to 16.8 cm, including a 5.1 to 6.6 cm long tail and a wingspan of 44 to 48.5 cm. The length of the forearms is 6.0 to 6.7 cm and the ears are 1.8 to 2.9 cm long. Females are 31 to 46 g lighter than males who weigh 38 to 55 g. The color of the fur on the upper side varies between earth brown ( umber ) and red-brown, while the underside is covered by light brown to light reddish fur. Typical is a white vertical stripe on the stomach, which occasionally has a red shadow. Specimens from Tanzania also had a bare patch on the throat, which was surrounded by white or light gray hair. The stain may have marked a gland .

distribution

The great African bulldog bat occurs from Eritrea and Ethiopia to Zimbabwe , but does not reach the Indian Ocean . Most of the evidence comes from mountains and was found at altitudes of 1500 to 2500 meters.

Way of life

The species is mainly known from savannahs , where overhanging rocks and crevices are common. One find comes from a building.

status

Due to the rare occurrence and the scarce information available on the way of life and on potential dangers, the IUCN lists the greater African bulldog bat under insufficient data (data deficient) .
