Coordinates: 52 ° 8 ′ 52.3 ″  N , 9 ° 55 ′ 38.6 ″  E The Große Steuer in Hildesheim is a historic stairway in the west of Hildesheim in the Moritzberg district, which runs between several sights that determine the image of the district shape.

Length and position

The big tax is 89 m long and branches off in the area of the small square Am Bergbrunnen from the Bergstraße (Hildesheim) to the southwest. It runs steeply uphill and flows into the Stiftskirchenweg, where it ends directly in front of the Mauritiuskirche . Since it was laid out on steeply sloping terrain, a total of 43 steps were laid out at regular intervals.

History and origin of the name

The Große Steuer is one of the oldest streets in the Hildesheim district of Moritzberg , which used to be called "Flecken Mauritius". The term tax in this context means "stairway" or "stairway". Not far south of it is another steep road called Kleine Steuer . On a map of the mountain town of Mauritius made around 1770 , which does not show any street names, it is already drawn, but not as a stairway. The current name Große Steuer is officially used for the first time in an address book in 1936/37. The Great Tax survived the Second World War undamaged.

Buildings and special features

  • One of the most striking buildings in the entire district rises up from the Große Steuer , the Neo-Gothic style Villa Windhorst , which was built in 1882-86 and is visible from afar and is surrounded by a natural stone wall. The parish church of the mountain town of Moritzberg , St. Margarethen, which was incorporated into Hildesheim in 1911, was located on their property until 1812 . It cannot be ruled out that stones that were extracted from the demolition of the church were used in the construction of the villa's wall. In the southwestern part of the wall, a striking stone can be seen on the large tax , in which a cross and the year 1410 are carved - it may come from St. Margarethen.
  • The big tax begins in front of the representative portal of the Protestant elementary and secondary school built between 1913 and 1915, which has been known for decades in Hildesheim under the name "Yellow School" because of the yellow plaster and is a no less striking building. The architectural style of the portal is based on the Baroque , as is the school's tower-like bay window that protrudes into the large tax . Both parts of the building create a connection to the baroque tower of the nearby church. The school's gymnasium is also located at the main tax .
  • The big tax ends directly in front of the Romanesque Mauritius church from the 11th century, whose octagonal tower (1765) dominates the silhouette of the entire district.
  • At the confluence of the Große Steuer in the Stiftskirchenweg, the Kratzbergsche Hof is worth seeing, a former curia building from 1654. It is an elongated, two-storey half - timbered house with a striking gable that towers over the Große Steuer and has a lasting impact. The west and north sides of the ground floor are made of quarry stone, while the cantilevered upper floor is accentuated by trusses with footbands above the threshold. The roof is loosened up by two mid-buildings with hatches.
