The Great Synagogue in the Polish city of Łomża was located on the southeast corner of the main square, at the intersection of today's 28 Giełczyńska and Senatorska Streets . It was built between 1878 and 1889 on the initiative of Rabbi Eliezer-Simcha Rabinowicz and designed by the Italian-Polish architect Enrico Marconi .

history

The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis after the start of World War II; the timing is unclear, however: according to the Polish online project Virtual Shtetl , it was burned down in September 1939; according to the Yad Vashem project Pinkas haKehilot , it was destroyed in September 1941, when the Łomża ghetto for the Jews was created shortly after the German attack on the Soviet Union from the surrounding area.

Today a bronze plaque with an inscription in Polish and Hebrew on the site of the synagogue commemorates the events. It was donated in 1986 by the local community on the 44th anniversary of the destruction of the Łomża ghetto. The board reads:

From July 1941 to November 1942 the Nazis created the ghetto between the streets of Dworna - today 22 lipca, Senatorska, Woziwodzka, Zielona, Żydowska - today Zatylna, Rybaki, in which they exterminated 9,000 Jewish Poles. 3,500 of them were shot in the forest near the villages of Giełczyn and Sławiec. The German occupiers established 15 ghettos in cities in the Łomża region. The tragic fate of the 40,000 people who lived there led them to the concentration camp in Treblinka . May the memory of you and those who helped you in these terrible last days endure.
