Piaskov Synagogue in Białystok

The Piaskow Synagogue in Białystok , a Polish city in the Podlaskie Voivodeship , was built from 1891 to 1893 on the site of a demolished wooden synagogue (built around 1820). The derelict synagogue at ulica Piękna 3 in the Piaski district is a protected cultural monument .

history

The building was partially destroyed during the German occupation in World War II. From 1945 to 1968 various Jewish organizations from Białystok were seated here. From 1968 the building stood empty and burned down in 1989. Renovation work in the 1970s made the property look like a synagogue. It served as a cinema, theater and cultural center.

In 1995 the synagogue building was renovated. This is where the Ludwik Zamenhof Foundation is located, where you can purchase textbooks and literature in Esperanto or take an Esperanto language course.
