The spruce weevil ( Hylobius abietis ), also known by the synonyms spruce weevil and large brown weevil , is a species from the weevil family .
description
Pine weevils grow up to 1.4 centimeters long. The chitin armor has a dark gray-brown basic color. Yellow scales also form a few yellowish horizontal stripes and spots on the wing covers. The body is oval in shape. There are light hairs on the pronotum. The head is extended to a trunk at the front. The top of the beetle is rough punctured, with the points on the wing-coverts forming messy longitudinal rows. The antennae show a slight kink in the middle and thicken into a lobe at the end.
distribution
The beetle is widespread in coniferous forests in Europe and Asia . It occurs from the lowlands to the mountains.
Way of life
In spring, the beetle can be observed on young trees, preferably on Douglas firs , pines and larches , generally on conifers , but more rarely on other trees such as alder , on whose bark it feeds. Later in the summer it prefers the branches of older trees. Under certain circumstances, the beetles can cause severe damage, and in some cases the young trees even die. The larvae develop in dead sticks and their shallow roots, especially from freshly felled or broken trees. They overwinter once and pupate the following year. The finished beetle hatches in autumn. The beetle falls from the branch with the slightest shock and pretends to be dead.
