The large stone grave in Issendorf was a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Issendorf , a district of Harsefeld in the Stade district ( Lower Saxony ). It was destroyed in 1741, but could still be examined beforehand.

location

According to Martin Mushard, the grave was located northeast of Issendorf, “about two shot away”. There it was right next to a Saxon urn cemetery that stretched north and west of the grave. There are several preserved large stone graves in the vicinity. 1.1 km to the east are the megalithic graves near Horneburg , 3.3 km to the west is the great stone grave of Ohrensen .

description

The grave was examined several times before it was destroyed. Around 1700, District Administrator Schulte from Horneburg carried out an excavation in the presence of the Governor General of Bremen-Verden Nils Gyllenstierna , whereby the western capstone was removed from the wall stones. In the 1720s Mushard examined the adjoining urn cemetery and also made a description and a drawing of the large stone grave, which he published in his main work Palaeogentilismus Bremensis .

The grave had an east-west oriented, probably rectangular barn bed with an enclosure. The number of surrounding stones has not been handed down. The six-bay burial chamber was located in the western part of the bed . Mushard was still able to identify five wall stones: the one removed by Schulte, three still resting on the wall stones and one that had fallen down a long time ago. The grave type can not be determined with certainty, but because of the size may be only a great dolmen or passage grave have acted.

During his examination, Schulte found only a backfill of sand and stones inside the chamber . There are no known finds of burial remains or grave goods .
