Sprockhoff no. 823

The large stone grave Werpeloh II with the Sprockhoff no. 823 is located in a forest northwest of Werpeloh in the Sögel municipality in the Emsland district in Lower Saxony . It originated between 3500 and 2800 BC. And is a megalithic system of the funnel beaker culture (TBK).

Of the once around 40 supporting stones, 22 are more or less in situ . Four of the original 14 capstones are missing. Most of them fell into the chamber. The largest capstone, 3.1 × 1.9 m, lies above the entrance and is almost rectangular. The approximately 16.5 meters long and 1.8–2.3 meters wide east-west facing chamber has its entrance in the middle of the southern long side. Only a few stones are present from the presumably oval enclosure of approximately 27.5 meters by 7.5 meters (other dimensions are also assumed). The type is referred to as a passage grave or Emsland chamber . Since an inventory was made in 1926, a stone seems to have been lost.

Nearby is the Steenhus von Werpeloh (Sprockhoff no. 822), the large stone grave Werpeloh III Sprockhoff no. 824 and next to Klein Stavern III (Sprockhoff No. 848) (two cap stones) the smallest passage grave west of the Weser ; with only three capstones and a large dolmen .
