The large stone grave of Rheine is located in the Rheine district of Schotthock on Lingener Damm (road) from Rheine to Lingen (Ems) in the outer northwest of Westphalia , in the Steinfurt district near the border with Emsland in Lower Saxony, which is rich in megalithic systems . It originated between 3500 and 2800 BC. And is a megalithic plant of the funnel beaker culture (TBK) with the Sprockhoff no. 981. Neolithic monuments are an expression of the culture and ideology of Neolithic societies. Their origin and function are considered to be the hallmarks of social development.

description

The hill, under which a large stone grave has long been suspected, was examined in 1983. During the test excavation, three cuts were made, and a partially destroyed system was found, the original length of which could not be precisely determined. The width could be reconstructed to over two meters.

Blocks of Osning sandstone were used to build the chamber , which must have been transported over a distance of at least ten kilometers. In addition to the grave goods, including a fragment of a spiral and a metal strip with hallmarks , both made of copper , there were also human skeletal remains in the chamber.

The large stone grave in Rheine is the only one in Westphalia so far that is still covered by its mound of earth. The relatively flat hill is clearly visible in the terrain and is made up of trees. The mounds of earth of other megalithic systems were probably eroded over time by the weather. Remnants of the former overhang were also found in the Westphalian large stone graves in Kirchborchen 1 , Etteln , Henglarn and Neuhaus Castle .
