location

Vintage car gas station with high bridge

The gas station is located in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort in the Hamburg-Mitte district at Billhorner Röhrendamm 4 between the Billhorner Canal and the Billhafen. The route of the Hamburg S-Bahn runs above the property on a high bridge built in 1983 .

construction

The construction is characteristic of gas stations from the 1950s. Concrete is used as the building material for walls and ceilings , the outer walls are clad with light-colored ceramic tiles and windows and doors are framed with metal. The building consists of a gas station attendant with roof, a maintenance hall and an additional sales room. The formerly four fully automatic petrol pumps were located in front of the gas station attendant under a canopy. This is supported by a so-called mushroom column - also typical for petrol stations from this time . The metal frames of the doors and windows have fine profiles. The long sides of the complex are extensively glazed and rounded at the corners.

history

The petrol station was designed and built in 1953 by Wilhelm Mastiaux and Ulrich Rummel. Unlike today, the Billhorner Röhrendamm was still an important connection between the Elbe bridges and Amsinckstrasse. The petrol station, which at the time was one of the largest petrol stations in Hamburg, was built on this busy street, on which various lines of the Hamburg tram also ran. In July 1954, the Benzol Association opened the modern facility with four fuel pumps. In 1962 the new Hamburg wholesale market was opened and the traffic management changed as a result. Since then, the main traffic has been routed past the Billhorner Röhrendamm, which led to a significant drop in sales. When in 1983 the route of the Hamburg S-Bahn was led over the site with a high bridge, the fuel tanks were dismantled because the lowering of the groundwater level necessary for the foundations of the bridge could have led to the tanks breaking. Petrol has not been sold since then, and the site has been used by workshops and car dealers for over three decades.

In 2010 Alex Piatscheck and Jann de Boer took over the petrol station, which was restored between August 2010 and September 2011. Since the building is a listed building, the work had to be carried out in accordance with the original appearance and the regulations of the authorities. In the course of the restoration, the rusted steel gates of the workshop halls were repaired, a new, retractable lifting platform was installed, the foundation of the test hall was renewed, the roof was re-sealed, the tiles on the outside were removed and renewed, the windows were replaced and a shop fitting made in the style of the 1950s .

The business has been running as a vintage petrol station since 2011 . It is planned to sell fuel again in the future.

Today the petrol station is a popular meeting place for drivers of old and youngtimers .

Gasoline pumps at the
vintage petrol station

The appearance of the filling station is based on the gasoline filling stations of the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to contemporary gas pumps , many furnishings, signs and advertisements from Gasolin were also used.

Services

The main area of business of the classic car filling station is a GTÜ partner company that specializes in classic cars and , in addition to general inspections for cars, trucks and motorcycles, offers gas system inspections and the preparation of reports for H license plates and valuation reports on a daily basis .

In the “refreshment room” breakfast is served - on weekdays from four in the morning - as well as small and large dishes.

Especially on the weekends, additional events take place on the premises, which mainly revolve around current events from the 1950s to 1980s. There are also regular car meetings and flea markets.

The gas station as a model
