history
The founders, the two managing directors Heribert “Mue” Meuser and Frank Stratmann, started out as DJs in the Beatbox music club in Wuppertal in 1988 . Groove Attack was founded in 1990 as an offshoot in the form of a record shop and moved to Cologne in 1992. 1993 saw the first release of the Groove Attack Productions label . In 2000 the sales department moved to Cologne-Mülheim; branches were founded in Los Angeles and New York . Initially, the DJ scene was won over as a buyer, and later large retail chains were also supplied. At the end of the 1990s, sales of maxi singles were between 3,000 and 5,000 units, while LP sales were between 8,000 and 12,000 units. The number of employees at that time was 37, of which 20 were permanent employees. In 2001 the company had almost 100 employees, but due to a drop in sales of 30% in the following year, this number was reduced by half. In the period that followed, Groove Attack was able to recover financially, not least thanks to the success of the exclusively distributed label Aggro Berlin . At the same time, Groove Attack expanded its business in the field of MP3 sales. This area is marketed under the name ga digital . In April 2008, Groove Attack took over the then Herne-based independent distributor Rough Trade Distribution, previously a subsidiary of the Bertelsmann group of companies. This created one of the largest independent distributors in Europe. At the same time, logistics was outsourced to the Bertelsmann subsidiary arvato .
